Scargo Tower: Complete History Behind The Dennis Landmark
Nestled atop Scargo Hill in Dennis, Massachusetts, Scargo Tower offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on Cape Cod. From its 30-foot height, visitors can take in stunning vistas stretching from Plymouth to Provincetown, with clear sights of the Sagamore Bridge on a crisp day. A Tower with a Story
The current cobblestone tower is actually the third iteration of Scargo Tower. The original tower, a wooden structure, was built in 1874 by the Tobey family, who also owned the nearby Nobscussett Hotel. Built as a tourist attraction, the tower had 1,500-1,600 visitors climb it in its first year. This first tower was unfortunately short-lived, falling victim to a powerful storm just two years after its construction.
Undeterred, the Tobey family rebuilt the tower, once again using wood. However, disaster struck again around 1900 when a fire reduced it to ashes. Finally, in 1901, a sturdier version of Scargo Tower was built, this time from cobblestone. This enduring structure has stood the test of time and remains a cherished landmark on Cape Cod.
Honoring the Tobey Family Legacy
A plaque at the entrance of Scargo Tower pays tribute to Charles Tobey and Francis Bassett Tobey, members of the prominent Tobey family who played a significant role in Dennis’s development. Historical records indicate that Tobey ancestors first settled in the area in the late 1600s, making the family an integral part of Cape Cod’s rich heritage.
In 1929, the Tobey heirs officially donated Scargo Tower and the surrounding land to the Town of Dennis, ensuring that future generations could continue to enjoy the remarkable views and historical significance of the site.
Visiting Scargo Tower Today
Scargo Tower sits atop Scargo Hill, which, at 160 feet above sea level, is one of the highest elevations on Cape Cod. The climb to the top of the tower consists of approximately 40 steps, rewarding visitors with sweeping views of Cape Cod Bay and beyond.
Although the tower was closed for maintenance around 2019, it reopened in 2021 after necessary restorations, including securing loose stones, reinforcing the parapet, and improving safety measures. Today, the Town of Dennis owns and operates Scargo Tower, with visiting hours subject to town regulations.
